Football lovers will agree that matches today are no longer only about who scored how many goals and how. It's a whole lot else- the million dollar stars, their trophy wives and girlfriends and last but not the least the charismatic managers of the clubs.
When Roman Abramovich gave Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho the boot last week the club's popularity took a severe drop almost akin to a sensex crash. And when i saw his replacement Avram Grant at the Sunday match between the two rivals Chelsea and Man-U I thought- you've got to be kidding! This man needs a makeover and fast. Bring on the fairy godmother puhlease.
Gone are the days when football managers were innoccuous looking bespectacled fogies attired in drab clothes with no training in public speaking. Today's managers are as big, if not bigger stars than the players they manage. They wear designer clothes, are good looking, adept at histrionics in front of the camera and give excellent sound bytes. Think Rafa Benitez, Frank Rijkaard, Arsene Wenger... I've been a chelsea fan for some time now and one of things i definitely looked forward to is Jose's stylish presence- the long blue coat and muffler, his brooding profile and his anger which he often vent at the referee/linesmen and even the players.
I thought Jose's absence was a big factor in Chelsea's loss to their arch rivals on Sunday even though Man u looked dull and un-focussed and scored those two goals only with the referee's help. My EPL viewing will definitely be affected until Jose finds a new club. Hurry up guys- i'm running out of popcorn!
