The mouse at petsmart
As Hindus we believe in rebirth and depending on what deeds (good or bad) you commit in each life you are reborn as a human or animal in the next life. Well, if God sends me as anything other than human I know where i want to be born- as a pet in the US. Seriously, pets in this country are really loved and fussed over like nowhere else. Just the amazing amount of toys and gadgets available for pet amusement and comfort is mindblowing. I would rate my visit to the local petshop in orlando as one of the most memorable. Fishes, birds, guinea pigs, hamsters, tarantulas and snakes were housed in unbelievably clean glass boxes that recreated their environment. All the animals were busy with some toy or the other. But the chap who caught my eye was a mouse that was running in what looked like an exercise wheel. It went on and on- like a being possessed- not slowing or pausing. Good god! I said. He is my Guru! Just look at him! What concentration, what determination! He is a fitness freak! We stood for several minutes zapped by the sight and not once did the mouse blink. I came away humbled. Now, everytime I slap the alarm when it rings and i dont feel like going for my walk i think of him.
