Nizam Bhai Premi
A couple of months back I attended the funeral service of a very dear aunt. A local bhajan singer and his troupe came and rendered holy songs for an hour. For the hundred odd people present there- of friends and family- it was a near spiritual experience. The gentleman who calls himself Sai Premi Nizam Bhai, is as his name suggests a Muslim who sings bhajans. Beginning with the gayatri mantra, he sang ganesh vandana, shiv, krishna and all the bhajans of the Hindus. Listening to his deep sonorous voice I wondered again at how people can think of religion in divisive terms. Religion was on nobody's minds. He sang and took all of us to another level by his voice, his words and his tehzeeb. If you live in delhi, i suggest you visit the Nizamuddin Aulia dargah on Thursdays and Fridays sometime where Nizam Bhai apparently sings every week. You'll know what i'm saying.
