Modernisation sucks

The British council library has been spruced up. Colour coded armchairs, a coffee and snacks counter, rows of glass topped display shelves and a do it yourself borrowing and return counters. All very good. But i wonder, as a seasoned member of more than a decade, what exactly is the purpose of spending all this money? book lovers like me want only two things- lots and lots of books and perhaps a place to sit and browse unnoticed. The new look hardly caters to either. All this attempt at beautification has compromised space and hence the number of books have been reduced. Bad news number one. The armchairs are fancy and great to look at. Not good to sit and read. I become conscious of my bad posture and there is no armrest, no table in front. Also everyone cant sit. There are just a handful of these chairs. Coffee is ok but again people make too much noise eating and spilling. Bad news number two. And all this has given the library to hike up their membership fee. So that's bad news number 3!
Oh yes- the DIY borrowing doesnt stamp your books anymore! What could be more idiotic?
