Three cheers for football!

The Football world cup is here and I have lost my sleep. This is one sport that has fascinated me since my teens when I accompanied the local neighbourhood boys to DCM and Santosh Trophy tournaments and cheered fromt the stands. Over the years football viewing has narrowed down to watching EPL matches on weekends and the bonanza every four years. One month of heady football day and night. So obsessed am I that both the kids have imbibed the fascination for this sport from childhood. We build a scrapbook every world cup and paste pictures and facts from newspapers and magazines with great gusto.
The best part of watching football is the unadulterated fun that you get for ninety minutes. No intrusion of repetitive ads like in cricket. The companies peddling their wares cannot intrude in the game- isnt that fantastic?
Critics will always come up with negative things to say (fussball/ fuseball) but the fact remains that it is the most popular sport in the world and played by almost every country. It's also very egalitarian and universal in its appeal. Three cheers for football!
