'God Bless E Sridharan' is how I start my day these days. Life for me has suddenly quantum-leaped in the comfort scale. Everyday commutes to work have become smooth as silk and as enjoyable as it used to be six years back when the metro rail first came to this part of the town. No more brushing against sweaty bodies, travelling like stacked parathas and being stared at from head to toe by men of all ages. It was the last that really got to me. I mean, somebody should teach these male commuters the art of checking people out. You don't gape at people and burn holes through their bodies like laser beams do. And contrary to what people think, it's not the rural bhaiya or illiterate chap who makes you uncomfortable but the street smart office goer and unclejis who are the biggest nuisance. They'll invade your personal space and stare at you unabashedly, like staring at fish in an aquarium. My heart would go out to the young girls. Many of them don't have the courage or the skill to handle such behaviour.
Naturally, I got into the habit of elbowing people (with my freakily sharp radius-ulna)or murmuring obscenities under my breath or stamping on their foot to take revenge. Small consolation for a spoiled mood, dishevelled clothes besides a ruined journey.
All that is history now, thanks to E S. With the new 'ladies only' coach mandatory in every metro train in Delhi, he has given our sex a lifeline and put the smiles back on our faces. Girls breeze in and out, nobody minds a shove, laughter rings in the air and you can actually sense the spirit of sisterhood in the coach. Especially when a stray male enters- knowingly or as most often- unknowingly. They are chased out with catcalls and titters. I'm all for equality of sexes, but I admit, in this case I am guilty of taking a privilege based on gender. Life has become infinitely better.
God bless E Sridharan!
